A heart for
teaching Kriah
For years, Malky was a Kriah pull-out specialist.
She pulled children out of class and gave them the one-on-one help that was supposed to fix their struggle.
But it didn't.
The same children came back year after year, still struggling — until they graduated elementary school like that. They were smart and capable children, not missing intelligence.
As an educator, it was heartbreaking for Malky to feel that what she was doing was truly not working, or doing “baby steps.”
Then one day, a top, very respected reading specialist looked at her and said:
“You have to understand, some children never graduate the Hebrew reading challenge. It's there for life.”
Malky will never forget that moment.
She felt her heart drop.
Is that what we are telling a Jewish child? That you will struggle with Krias Shema for the rest of your life? That you will stand in Shul on Yom Kippur and stumble through the words? That this pain is just your lot?
Malky went home that day with such a heavy pain. She kept hearing those words on repeat.
And a small, strong voice inside her said: No. That cannot be true.

To say a child will never get it — is to give up on him.
And Malky refused to give up.
